“Post Industry - Reframing Macau’s Industrial Fabric” was an urban design workshop organized by CURB - Center for Architecture and Urbanism in partnership with the Master of Urban Design at the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong at Ponte 9 on 17-21 January 2017. The workshop was part of a multi-format initiative conceived with the aim to explore the status of the city's industrial fabric, and to investigate possible strategies, policies, and design speculations as a means to identity Macau's potential in a post-industrial scenario.

Macau holds a vast industrial fabric, yet the city's industrial sector is declining rapidly. Through the development of seven study-cases of different typologies, this think-thank in urban regeneration and resilience aimed to retrofit a number of buildings and to connect them with the future economy, while serving as catalysts to uplift their surrounding environment

“Shaped by Use: Individual Designs Reshaping the City” is a spatial installation by Nuno Soares that was selected as a Collateral Exhibition of the 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Shenzhen). It was hosted at Ponte 9 Creative Platform from 16 January to 13 February 2016 with the support of CURB Center for Architecture and Urbanism.

“Shaped by Use” explored the phenomenon of appropriation of urban space, its materialization, the impact on the city landscape, and its future potential as a field for architectural exploration. It was organized in two parts: Appropriation Devices – an installation that portrayed the urban space resulting from the appropriation by different devices – and CityScape – a prospective installation that invited the visitors to interact and simulate a future cityscape.

The Architects Association of Macau and CURB – Center for Architecture and Urbanism hosted jointly the “AAM Architectural Design Competition Exhibition” between 19 October and 2 November 2015. The exhibition featured a total of 14 projects, which included all the works submitted for the competition alongside the winning projects. The project diverse visions, strategies and design solutions for the waterside and the surrounding enhancement of the Nam Van and Sai Van lakes.

“Iconophilia: Spectacular Architecture and Design” was an architecture and design symposium organized by the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph in 30th May 2015.

This symposium brought together a group of leading architects and designers from Asia, Europe, and America to discuss the new relationships between foreground and background, figure and field, decoration and abstraction, substance and image, transience and permanence, criticism and production, and the ways in which spectacular architecture and design affects our experience of the world.

Reboot was an exhibition of work produced by design students from the Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of Saint Joseph during the 2013–2014 academic year. It represented a reinvigoration of the USJ Design program, bringing it more closely in alignment with international academic standards while simultaneously making it more relevant to our specific location in Macau and East Asia as a whole. The work on display here comprised an attempt to rethink aspects of our everyday environment from first principles, and thereby trigger a subtle, ongoing revolution in the quality of life for citizens in Macau.

“The Inner Harbour Roundtable on the Revitalization of Macau’s Vernacular Heritage” was an international event that brought together the perspectives of the civil society, the authorities, the local academic community, and a group of leading scholars on a platform of debate about urban issues that are vital for Macauʼs future development. By bringing into an open discussion the idiosyncrasies of local urban heritage – both built and immaterial – the event aimed to inform policy recommendations for a sustainable and socially integrated revitalization of Macauʼs Inner Harbour.

The roundtable was held on 9-12 December 2013 at Ponte 9. It was co-organized by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), the University of Macau (UMAC) and the Institute for European Studies of Macau (IEEM), with the support of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau (ICM). The event and documentation was coordinated by architect Nuno Soares with the research support of CURB – Center for Architecture and Urbanism.
